About the project

The Kaskia Wellbeing Block is being developed to meet future housing, care and community living needs in the heart of Turku.

It will combine homes, wellbeing services and shared spaces – creating a natural meeting place for everyday life.

The project is being developed by Stiftelsen Eschnerska Frilasarettet, a Turku-based foundation, in collaboration with C.G. Sundell’s Foundation.

Construction began in 2025, with the first buildings scheduled for completion in 2027.

Latest updates

Piling continues – blasting works to resume no earlier than week 16

Construction site update for weeks 13–14

Ground and foundation works continue at the Kaskia Wellbeing Block construction site. Piling is progressing as planned on both sides of the site. To date, 277 out of 356 piles have been installed, and the work is expected to be completed by the end of April. During the summer, steel piling will also be carried out for the foundations of the new residential building to be constructed in the courtyard.

– Blasting works will resume no earlier than week 16, says Site Manager Matti Koivu from Lujatalo. Bedrock grouting works are ongoing.

The installation of the tower crane has been postponed and is scheduled to begin on 25 March 2026.
– The work will be carried out by experienced professionals, and all safety regulations will be followed, Koivu states.

Drone filming will also take place at the site during the project. The operator has all required permits.

During week 13, scaffolding will be installed around the Tower Building. The hospital buildings and the Tower Building are undergoing a comprehensive renovation, including both interiors and facades.

Kaskia is a complex and demanding urban development project where new construction meets historical architecture. Heritage experts are involved in the renovation planning of the former Åboland Hospital and the Tower Building, including aspects such as exterior colour schemes.

Demolition and construction works

Indoors, construction works continue alongside demolition in both the former hospital building and the Tower Building.

Demolition works in the Tower Building are nearing completion. In the hospital building, demolition continues, as it cannot be carried out throughout the entire building at once. The work proceeds in phases alongside new construction to ensure structural safety.

From week 16 onwards, demolition will continue on the Sirkkalakatu side, which may cause temporary noise and vibration.

We thank all neighbours for their patience during the construction of the Kaskia block.
